The approach

One bright light makes a garden worse, not better

The instinct with outdoor lighting is to buy the brightest thing available and point it at the yard. It rarely works. A single high-output source flattens everything it hits and throws deep black shadow around the edges, so the garden reads as a wall of glare with darkness behind it. You see less, not more.

What actually works is layers. A wash down a facade, a low light at a step, a couple of pools along a path, an uplight into a tree, something soft over the area where people sit. Each one modest, each doing a specific job. Together they give a garden depth and make it genuinely usable after dark.

The second half of the job is specification. Sydney weather is hard on outdoor fittings, and on the harbour side of the North Shore salt air is harder still. Ingress rating, fixing material and where the transformer lives are what decide whether you are enjoying this in five years or replacing it in two.

None of that is expensive. It is just decided at design time rather than at the checkout.

Almost every good scheme is some combination of these. Very few gardens need all five, and almost none need any of them at full output.

The rule of thumb: light the things worth looking at and the things you could trip on. Everything else can stay dark, and the scheme is better for it.

Colour temperature, and why warmer wins outside

The single choice that most changes how a garden feels at night, and the one most often left to whatever the box happened to be.

The insect point is not folklore. Cooler, bluer light attracts substantially more of them, which matters if the light is anywhere near where you eat. In a bush-adjacent suburb it also matters for the wildlife the light spills onto, which is worth a thought in places like Castlecrag and Middle Cove where the reserve starts at the back fence.

Keep a scheme to one or two colour temperatures. Mixing four across a garden is the quickest way to make an expensive installation look accidental.

Types

What goes where

Path, step and driveway

Bollards suit a planted path, spike lights suit garden beds that get rearranged, and recessed step lights are the right answer for stairs because they light the tread without shining in your eyes.

Aim for overlapping pools rather than isolated bright spots. A line of harsh dots is harder to walk than a gentle continuous wash.

Garden and feature lighting

Uplights into a tree canopy, grazing light across a sandstone wall, and spots picking out a single specimen plant. This is the layer that gives a garden depth rather than just visibility.

In-ground fittings need a higher ingress rating than most people buy, because they end up sitting in water after rain.

Deck, patio and pergola

Festoon strung properly rather than draped, or soft downlights in a pergola. Dimming matters more here than anywhere else, because the light level you want for dinner is not the one you want for finding the barbecue tongs.

Fixed festoon on a permanent circuit looks and lasts far better than an extension lead solution.

Security and approach

Handled properly this overlaps with the rest rather than fighting it. A well-lit entry and path does most of the security work, with sensor-controlled or higher-output fittings covering the areas nobody legitimate uses at night.

We usually zone it so the security layer can run independently of the pretty one.

The parts you will never see

Where outdoor lighting actually succeeds or fails, long after the fittings have been chosen.

Voltage drop on long low-voltage runs

Extra-low voltage garden lighting is excellent, but push it too far on cable that is too thin and the fittings at the end of the run come up visibly dimmer than the ones near the transformer.

Solved by sizing the cable for the run and, on bigger gardens, by splitting into more than one circuit rather than daisy-chaining everything.

Cable routed through the garden

Underground cabling needs to be at a proper depth and mechanically protected where it might be dug into. Around here it also has to contend with sandstone a spade-depth down, which is why we plan routes before quoting rather than after.

A cable put in casually is the one a landscaper finds with a mattock two years later.

Corrosion near the water

Salt air destroys cheap fittings fast. Corroded terminals, seized screws and moisture inside the housing show up within a couple of seasons on hardware store gear anywhere near the harbour.

Marine-appropriate fittings and stainless fixings are the fix, and they cost less over any sensible time horizon.

No thought given to control

A garden where every light comes on at once, all evening, gets switched off and stops being used. Zoning and a sensible control method are what make a scheme part of the house.

Photocell for dusk switching, an astronomical timer that tracks sunset through the year, or zoned smart control if you want the path and the deck behaving differently.

Light what you mean to light

AS/NZS 4282 Control of obtrusive outdoor lighting

Light that leaves your property is doing nothing for you. It glares into a neighbour’s window, washes into the reserve behind the fence, or goes straight up into the sky. There is an Australian standard concerned with exactly these obtrusive effects, and while it is aimed at larger installations the thinking applies just as well to a garden.

In practice it means shielded fittings, aiming down and inward, and choosing an output that suits the thing being lit. An uplight into a tree should stop at the canopy rather than continuing into the sky, which is a matter of beam angle and positioning rather than expense.

On the bush-backed streets of the lower North Shore there is a second reason to care. Spill lighting into a reserve affects the wildlife in it, and a warm, shielded, well-aimed scheme is both a better neighbour and a better-looking garden.

Site visit and a scheme

We walk the garden, usually at dusk if we can, and work out which layers earn their place. You get a plan of what goes where and a fixed price before anything starts.

Installation

Cable routes planned around the sandstone, transformers sited somewhere serviceable rather than buried in a garden bed, fittings chosen for the exposure of each position, and the whole lot zoned the way you will actually use it.

Aim, test and hand over

Aiming is done after dark, because that is the only time you can see what you are doing. We set the controls, walk it with you, issue your Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work and clean up.

Outdoor lighting questions

What does an IP rating actually mean for outdoor lights?

It is two digits and they describe two different things. The first is protection against solids, on a scale up to 6, where 6 means fully dust tight. The second is protection against water, where 4 is splashing from any direction, 5 is a low pressure jet, 6 is a powerful jet and 7 means the fitting can survive temporary immersion. So IP65 is dust tight and hosed-proof, which suits most exposed positions, while an in-ground fitting that can end up sitting in a puddle wants IP67. Buying below what the position demands is the most common reason outdoor lights fail early.

Should outdoor lighting be 12 volt or 240 volt?

Both have a place. Extra-low voltage garden lighting runs from a transformer, uses smaller cable and is well suited to garden beds and planting that gets moved around. The catch is voltage drop: run it too far on cable that is too thin and the fittings at the end of the run visibly dim. Mains voltage suits fixed architectural positions, wall lights, step lights and anything driving real output. We work out which makes sense per zone rather than committing the whole garden to one approach.

What colour temperature should I use outside?

Warmer than most people expect. Around 2700K to 3000K flatters brickwork, sandstone, timber and planting, and it reads as inviting rather than institutional. Cooler light, 4000K and above, makes a garden look like a car park, attracts noticeably more insects and contributes more to skyglow. The one place cooler light earns its keep is pure security lighting where you want maximum apparent brightness, and even there it is worth being deliberate about it.

Will outdoor lighting survive near the harbour?

Only if it is specified for it. Salt-laden air destroys cheap outdoor fittings remarkably quickly, and on the harbour side of the North Shore we see corroded terminals, weeping fittings and seized screws within a couple of seasons on hardware store gear. Marine-appropriate fittings and stainless fixings cost more once instead of less repeatedly, and it is the single specification decision that most determines whether you are doing this again in three years.

Can outdoor lights be put on a timer or an app?

Yes, and it makes a real difference to whether they get used. Options range from a simple photocell that switches at dusk, through astronomical timers that follow sunset through the year, to zoned smart control where the path, the garden and the entertaining area come on independently. Zoning is the part worth spending thought on. Very few people want the whole garden lit at the same level all evening.
