The shape of the place

Where Sydney is actually being built, and where the roofs are

Western Sydney holds about 2.075 million people, roughly 40 per cent of Greater Sydney, and it is projected to reach about 2.383 million by 2034. It is not a suburb on the edge of the city. It is close to half the city.

What matters electrically is the kind of housing that growth produces: detached, recent, large, and owned rather than rented. That combination is exactly what drives rooftop solar, and it shows. Postcode 2765, which takes in Marsden Park and Box Hill, was the second highest postcode in Australia for solar installations in the year to October 2024, with 1,823 systems. In that postcode 96 per cent of homes are separate houses, more than 71 per cent have four bedrooms or more, and the average system installed is around 11 kilowatts. That is a big array by any standard.

So a very large number of houses out here are generating serious amounts of power in the middle of the day. And on 1 July 2026 the value of sending that power to the grid fell again, because so much of it is now arriving at once.

That single fact has changed what a good electrician is for in this part of Sydney. Ten years ago the job was getting panels on a roof. Now the panels are already there, and the job is making sure the household actually uses what they produce, rather than giving it away at a few cents and buying it back at full price six hours later.

The numbers that changed

Your roof peaks five hours before your house does

This is the single most useful chart for anyone out here with solar on the roof, and almost nobody has been shown it.

What it means: your generation peaks around the middle of the day, when the house is empty and the surplus earns the all-day benchmark of 3.4 to 6.5 cents. Your own demand peaks around 6.30 in the evening, inside the window where exports on the Endeavour network are benchmarked at 16.9 to 19.9 cents, by which time the roof has stopped producing. Roughly four times the value, five hours out of reach. The generation and load shapes here are typical rather than measured, but the tariff figures are the published ones.

There are only three honest answers to that gap, and none of them is more panels. You can store the surplus and release it in the evening, which is a battery. You can move a big load into the middle of the day so the surplus never leaves the property, which is timing and control on hot water, a pool pump or a car charger. Or you can accept the exports and do nothing, which is a perfectly reasonable choice if your surplus is small.

Working out which of the three suits you is not a sales question, it is an arithmetic one, and it starts with how much you are actually exporting rather than how much you generate. Those are very different numbers and most people only know the second one.

Local conditions

Six things about Western Sydney that change the job

Most of these did not exist as issues five years ago, which is why plenty of advice about them is out of date.

Self-consumption beats export now

The all-day feed-in benchmark for 2026-27 is 3.4 to 6.5 cents a kilowatt hour, down from 4.8 to 7.3 the year before. What you pay to import has not moved the same way, so a kilowatt hour used at home is worth several times one sent to the grid.

That inverts the old advice. Ten years ago the goal was to generate as much as possible. Now it is to consume as much of your own generation as you can, which is a wiring, control and timing job rather than a panel job.

The 5 kW export limit, and what replaces it

A single-phase home on the Endeavour network currently has a fixed 5 kW export limit, which is why an 11 kW array can find itself curtailed on a clear day. Flexible exports let a qualifying system export up to 10 kW most of the time by responding to real network conditions instead of assuming the worst case.

It needs a CEC-approved smart inverter with an internet connection and correct net export metering. It is due to become the standard connection offering for new and upgraded systems from late 2026, so anyone installing now should be specifying an inverter that qualifies.

The battery rebate shrinks every year

The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program has run since 1 July 2025 and is designed to taper. From May 2026 it is worth roughly $252 per usable kilowatt hour, about 30 per cent of a typical installed cost, and the published schedule steps it down annually toward 2030.

Conditions worth knowing: the battery has to go in with rooftop solar at the same premises, nominal capacity between 5 and 100 kWh, and it must be capable of joining a virtual power plant even if you never actually join one. Above 14 kWh the rebate is reduced.

Sometimes a timer beats a battery

A storage hot water element is a large, patient load, and moving it off an overnight controlled load into the middle of the day turns surplus you were exporting at a few cents into hot water you would otherwise buy at full retail. No storage, no inverter, no rebate paperwork.

Pool pumps and car charging shift the same way. It is not the answer for every house, but it is the cheapest thing to try first, and it is the part a solar retailer has no interest in doing for you.

New estates are finished, not generous

A volume-built house is usually well constructed and correctly certified, and it is specified for the household on handover day. Then a pool goes in, the garage gets a charger, someone adds a second air conditioner and the study becomes an office.

Nothing is faulty. The installation is simply complete rather than expandable. It is far cheaper to sort out on a modern board than on a forty-year-old one, and there is normally a sensible path to growing into it rather than starting again.

Chargers and solar want to be planned together

A car charged from the grid at 11pm and a roof exporting at noon are two halves of a problem solving each other badly. Charging in the middle of the day on your own generation is close to the cheapest energy you will ever put in a car.

That needs the charger, the solar and the switchboard treated as one design rather than three separate purchases. Done in that order it is straightforward. Done in the wrong order it usually means going back into the board twice.

The useful split is between the estates and everything else. In a house built in the last fifteen years the installation is sound and the question is capacity: how to add a battery, a charger and a pool circuit to a board that was finished on handover day.

In the 1950s to 1970s stock through Mount Druitt, Emerton and Green Valley the question is the opposite, and it is the same one we get on the North Shore. Original wiring, ceramic fuses, no earth on the lighting, and a household running far more than the installation was ever built for.

Getting it in the right order

The three things people buy backwards

Solar, a battery and a car charger are usually bought as three separate purchases, from three separate companies, in whatever order the marketing reached the household. Each one is fine on its own. Together, bought in the wrong order, they mean opening the switchboard three times and discovering the constraint on the third visit.

The switchboard is where all three meet. A modern board has finite room, a fixed number of ways, and a main switch and consumer mains sized for what the house had when it was built. A battery needs space and its own protection. A charger needs a dedicated circuit and often load management. Solar needs an inverter connection and correct metering. All of that competes for the same enclosure.

So the useful sequence is to look at the board and the supply first, decide what the house can carry, and then buy in an order that does not strand anything. Sometimes that means the battery waits a year. Sometimes it means the charger goes in smaller than the brochure suggests and works perfectly well. Occasionally it means the honest answer is that nothing needs upgrading at all.

None of that is exciting, and it is why it usually gets skipped. It is also the difference between a system that works as sold and one that quietly underdelivers for a decade.

Unlike most of Sydney, the story out here is not what happened a century ago. It is what happened since last winter.

    The battery rebate arrives

    The federal Cheaper Home Batteries Program starts on 1 July 2025, discounting home storage by roughly 30 per cent for systems installed with rooftop solar. For the first time, storing your own surplus rather than exporting it becomes an obvious thing to consider rather than a niche one.

  2. May 2026

    And starts shrinking

    From 1 May 2026 the rebate steps down to around $252 per usable kilowatt hour, and capacity above 14 kWh receives a reduced rate. The schedule tapers annually toward 2030, which means the arithmetic on a battery is slightly worse every year you wait rather than slightly better.

  3. Jul 2026

    The feed-in benchmark falls again

    On 1 July 2026 IPART's all-day benchmark drops to 3.4 to 6.5 cents a kilowatt hour, from 4.8 to 7.3. Meanwhile the Endeavour evening window of 4pm to 8pm is benchmarked at 16.9 to 19.9 cents. The gap between generating at noon and using at six is now the whole game.

  4. Jul 2026

    The airport opens to freight

    Western Sydney International, named for Nancy-Bird Walton, begins freight operations on 26 July 2026. The region has been building toward it for a decade, and it is the anchor for the employment growth that the housing has been running ahead of.

  5. Oct 2026

    And to passengers

    Passenger services begin on 25 October 2026. Whatever else it does, it puts a second international airport inside the fastest growing part of the city, and the commercial and residential building around it is already underway.

  6. Late 2026

    Flexible exports become the default

    Endeavour Energy's flexible exports arrangement is due to become the standard connection offering for new and upgraded solar from late 2026, lifting typical export capability from a fixed 5 kW to up to 10 kW for qualifying systems. Which inverter you choose today decides whether you are eligible.

  7. 2034

    Another 300,000 people

    Western Sydney is projected to grow from about 2.075 million in 2024 to about 2.383 million by 2034. Most of them will live in detached houses with large roofs, which means everything on this page gets more relevant rather than less.

Work is done to AS/NZS 3000 and certified. We lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work within 7 days of testing, which since 1 July 2026 goes through the BCNSW eCert portal.

Western Sydney sits on the Endeavour Energy network rather than Ausgrid, which changes the connection process, the forms and the metering arrangements, though not the wiring rules themselves. Anything at the point of supply is Level 2 work, and we hold that accreditation, so a supply increase or a metering change does not need a second contractor.

On the solar side, we are the electrical half rather than a panel retailer. That means the circuits, the switchboard, the metering, the control and the load shifting, and an honest read on whether a battery earns its money at your export volume rather than at an average one.

Figures on this page are the published benchmarks and program rates as they stand in 2026. Feed-in benchmarks are a voluntary guide that retailers may follow, beat or ignore, so check your own retailer's offer against them rather than assuming.

Is my solar still worth having now the feed-in tariff has dropped?

Yes, but the value has moved from exporting to using. IPART's all-day benchmark for 2026-27 is 3.4 to 6.5 cents a kilowatt hour, down from 4.8 to 7.3 the year before, because so much solar now floods the middle of the day. What has not fallen is what you pay to import, so every kilowatt hour you use from your own roof instead of buying is still worth full retail. The job is no longer to generate more, it is to consume more of what you already generate. That is a wiring and timing problem, which is our half of it.

Why is my export worth so much more in the evening?

Because that is when the grid actually needs it. On the Endeavour network the benchmark for exports between 4pm and 8pm in 2026-27 is 16.9 to 19.9 cents a kilowatt hour, against 3.4 to 6.5 for the all-day rate. That is roughly four times, and it is the entire argument for storing midday surplus rather than giving it away. The catch is that your roof produces almost nothing by then, which is why the answer is a battery or a shifted load rather than more panels.

Our estate is new. Why is the switchboard already full?

Volume-built homes are correctly certified and sensibly sized for the build, and then a pool arrives, a car charger arrives, the garage becomes a gym and someone adds a second air conditioner. The installation is not faulty, it is finished. The good news is that this is far cheaper to sort on a modern board than on a forty-year-old one, and there is usually a sensible way to grow into it without starting again.

Do you charge more to come out this far?
