Your phone socket is probably not faulty. It was switched off

Call anyone about a dead phone point in Sydney and the honest first answer is usually that nothing is broken. As the nbn reached each area, the copper telephone network was retired behind it. Landline and ADSL services running over Telstra's copper were disconnected on a rolling schedule, generally around eighteen months after an area was declared ready for service. Sydney's fixed line rollout passed that point years ago, so for the overwhelming majority of homes and businesses here the disconnection has already happened, and it is permanent.

What that means at the wall is simple. The socket in the hallway is still wired to a pair that runs out to the street, and that pair no longer goes anywhere. There is no dial tone to find, no fault to repair and no provider who will come and restore it. A tester on that socket reads exactly what it should read, which is nothing at all.

Dial tone now starts inside the building. On an nbn connection that carries a phone service, the voice service comes out of a port on the connection box or on the router: a digital service dressed up to look like a landline. The number can be the same one you have had for thirty years and the handset can be the same handset. The thing it plugs into is a different object entirely.

So phone line work now splits into two jobs that have very little to do with each other. One is getting the sockets in your walls fed from the new source, or putting a point where you actually want one. The other is faults on copper that is still very much in service, because on three of the five nbn technologies the pairs in your walls are what carries the internet. The second one is where most of the repair work is.

Where nbn's responsibility stops and yours starts

Every fixed line connection has a network boundary point. It is a real, physical place, and which side of it a fault sits on decides who pays to put it right.

What it means: left of the amber line is nbn's network, and a fault there is your provider's to chase at no cost to you. Right of it is your property's cabling, and no provider will touch it. The trap is that the boundary is a different object depending on which connection you have, so people report faults that were never nbn's to fix, wait weeks for a technician, and occasionally get charged for the visit. Knowing which box or socket is the boundary saves both.

The practical test takes ten minutes. Unplug everything else, take the modem to the boundary point itself and connect it there. If it works at the boundary and fails at the socket in the study, the fault is in your wiring, and no amount of chasing your provider will change that. If it fails at the boundary too, it is theirs, and you now have something concrete to tell them rather than an opinion.

Apartments have an extra layer that nobody expects. The boundary is usually the main distribution frame in the basement or a service cupboard, and between that frame and your unit sits a riser owned by the building plus a jumper on the frame deciding which pair in that riser is yours. Both are past the boundary, so both are the property's problem, and in a strata block responsibility for them is split between the owners corporation and the lot owner. On fibre to the node, the building and the kerb, the twisted pair that used to carry a phone call now carries the internet, and it is being asked to do something it was never designed for. Voice needed a few kilohertz. VDSL2 uses tens of megahertz, and at those frequencies the things that never used to matter start to matter a great deal: a corroded joint in a pit, water in a lead-in, a poorly made connection behind a wall plate, a length of flat untwisted extension cable somebody added in 1994.

That is why so many internet problems in older Sydney houses are really phone line problems. The symptom is a slow or dropping connection, so the modem gets replaced and the plan gets upgraded, and neither one touches the cause. The cheapest useful diagnostic is to connect at the boundary and compare the numbers with what you get at the socket you normally use.

Some of this has an end date. nbn is upgrading the remaining fibre to the node premises, roughly 622,000 of them nationally, with the program due to finish by the end of 2030. Once a property moves to full fibre the copper stops carrying anything and this whole class of fault goes away with it. Until then, the pairs in the wall are still doing the work, and they are as old as the house.

Symptoms

Telling a wiring job from a fault

These four cover most of what we get called to, and the first one is not a fault at all.

No dial tone at any socket in the house

Almost always the disconnected copper rather than a fault. The wiring inside the walls is usually intact and still connected back to a lead-in that goes nowhere.

The fix is to isolate that wiring from the incoming pair and feed it from the phone port on the router instead, which brings every socket in the house back with your current number.

One socket is dead and the others are fine

That is a real fault, and it is on your side of the boundary. Extension sockets fail at the terminations far more often than anywhere in the middle of a run.

A screw backed off, a conductor nicked when a plate was refitted, or a joint that corroded in a damp wall. Quick to find with a tester and expensive to guess at without one.

The connection drops out when it rains

A classic copper fault, and the water is usually nowhere near your house. Moisture reaches a joint or a pit somewhere between you and the node, resistance shifts and the modem loses sync.

If it happens with the modem connected at the boundary point too, it is nbn's to fix, and reporting it in exactly those terms tends to move things along.

Crackle on the line, or speed that fell off a cliff

Noise on a pair always has a physical cause: a corroded joint, a length of flat untwisted cable added years ago, or phone cable strapped alongside power cable for part of its run.

On a voice call that was an annoyance. On VDSL2 it costs real speed, because the frequencies the noise occupies are the ones carrying your data.

The work

What we actually get called out for

Four jobs make up nearly all of it, and only one of them is a repair in the old sense of the word.

Bringing dead sockets back

The wiring is already there and it usually still works. It gets disconnected from the incoming lead-in first, so nothing is fed back toward the network, and then run from the phone port on your router. Your existing sockets come back to life, with your existing number.

Where the old cabling is tired, or the router sits in an awkward corner, one new point beside the router or a cordless base with handsets around the house does the same job for less money.

MDF jumpering in apartments

Your unit reaches the basement frame through a riser, and a jumper on that frame decides which pair in the riser is yours. Jumpers get moved when a neighbour changes providers, riser pairs get damaged during building work, and the frame in an older block can be an unlabelled mess.

Identifying your pair, proving it and re-jumpering it is routine for someone who does it often and a long afternoon for someone who does not.

New points, and old ones replaced

The three pin socket still on plenty of Sydney walls is the 600 series: a 605 plug into a 610 socket, with the switched 611 turning up occasionally on equipment that needed a separate incoming path. It was superseded by modular connectors in the 1970s and adapters still work fine.

If a plate is coming off the wall anyway, a modern outlet is better value, and running data cable to it while the wall is open is better again.

Fault finding past the boundary

Providers will not troubleshoot beyond the network boundary point, and that is fair enough, because it is not their equipment. If a technician has already been out and found nothing, or you have been told the problem is in your internal wiring, that is the job.

We test rather than guess, and you get told which segment failed and why, not just that something has been replaced.

Worth knowing

If the landline still matters, read this part

A copper landline drew its power from the exchange, which is exactly why it kept working when the lights went out. A phone on the nbn does not. It runs from the connection box and the router sitting in your house, and when those lose power the phone stops, including calls to 000.

nbn stopped supplying a power supply unit with battery back-up in June 2024. Units already installed keep working and give roughly five hours, and the battery inside one is a consumable: if a red light appears next to the replace battery marker, that is what it is telling you. New connections do not get one at all, so the fallback is a mobile phone, or a small uninterruptible supply feeding the connection box and the router.

This matters most to the people least likely to bring it up. Medical alarms, back to base security monitoring, fax machines, EFTPOS terminals and lift phones were all designed around a copper line and its exchange power. Fire and lift emergency systems registered with nbn can be exempt from immediate disconnection, and medical alarm users can register their device as well. If somebody in the house depends on an alarm, test it against the new connection rather than assuming it carried across, and do it on a day when nothing is wrong.

Telephone cabling has its own rulebook

Licence 387609C Level 2 accredited & insured

Cabling that connects to the telecommunications network is not covered by an electrical licence. It sits under the ACMA's Cabling Provider Rules and is carried out to AS/CA S009, the customer cabling wiring rules, and that applies to a single new phone point exactly as it applies to a full network installation. It is worth asking about before anyone opens a wall. There is more detail on our data cabling page.

It matters at the boundary in particular. Internal wiring that is going to be fed from a router's phone port has to be isolated from the incoming lead-in first, so nothing is pushed back toward the network. It is a small step, easy to skip, and awkward to explain afterwards.

Where a job also involves electrical work, a new outlet for a modem or a circuit for a cabinet, that side is certified as electrical work. We lodge a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work within 7 days of testing, which since 1 July 2026 goes through the BCNSW eCert portal.

Why is there no dial tone at my wall socket?

Because the copper behind it was disconnected, not because it is faulty. Sydney passed that point years ago. The socket is still wired to a pair that runs out to the street, and that pair no longer connects to anything. Can I still get a landline number?

Yes. Almost every provider still sells a home phone service, it just arrives differently. The voice service comes out of a port on the nbn connection box or on the router, and you can usually keep the number you have had for thirty years. What changes is where the handset plugs in: the source is now inside the house rather than out in the street, so the sockets in your walls do not automatically carry it.

Can my old phone sockets be made to work again?

Usually, and it is a common job. The existing wiring in the walls is generally still sound. It is disconnected from the incoming lead-in, so nothing is pushed back toward the network, and then fed from the phone port on the router instead. Every socket in the house comes back with your current number. Where the old cabling is in poor condition or the router sits somewhere awkward, a single new point beside the router or a cordless base with handsets does the same job for less.

My provider says the fault is in my internal wiring. What now?

They are usually right, and they are not being difficult: past the network boundary point it is not their equipment. The boundary is the nbn connection box on the wall for full fibre and HFC, the first socket inside the premises for fibre to the node, the socket the connection device plugs into for fibre to the kerb, and the main distribution frame in the basement for an apartment. Everything beyond it belongs to the property, and that is the part we test and repair.

Will my phone still work in a blackout?

Not unless you have arranged for it. A copper landline drew its power from the exchange, which is why it worked when the lights went out. Why does my internet drop out when the weather is bad?

On fibre to the node, the building or the kerb, the internet arrives over the same copper pair that used to carry your phone calls. Moisture in a joint or a pit changes the resistance of that pair, and the modem loses sync. It is a genuine fault rather than bad luck, and where it sits decides who fixes it. If the same thing happens with the modem connected at the boundary point, it is on nbn's side and worth reporting exactly that way.
