The name means our home, and people here take the words seriously. Houses with grounds rather than yards, and every property a small campus: gate, garden, garage, pool, studio, house. We wire all six.

When the North Shore railway opened in 1890, Wahroonga became the place Sydney's successful built their country houses in town: Federation and Edwardian estates by architects like Howard Joseland and John Horbury Hunt, set in gardens rather than on blocks, along streets planted so well that a century later the trees are the suburb's signature. Hunt's timber Highlands went up in 1891; Hardy Wilson built Purulia for himself in 1913; and the pattern they set, a serious house in serious grounds, still defines the place.
Then, in 1950, the suburb of grand old houses acquired Australia's most famous new one. Rose Seidler House, built by a young Harry Seidler for his parents, introduced this country to modern architecture: glass walls, open plans, and a kitchen so electrically ambitious it was national news. The house of the future was built in Wahroonga, which we have always thought says something about the suburb.
Today nearly 18,000 people live here, three quarters of homes are separate houses, and the institutions are part of the fabric: the San on Fox Valley Road since 1903, Knox and Abbotsleigh with their daily tides, the village by the station. But for our trade the defining fact is the block itself. A Wahroonga property is not a house, it is a campus: gate, driveway, garage, garden, pool, studio, house, all wanting power, all a long way apart. That is the work, and this page is about how we do it properly.

What it means: on a compact block, electrical design barely matters, because nothing is far from the board. On a Wahroonga block, distance is the whole game. Voltage drops over long runs, so cable is sized for metres as much as load. Satellites like studios and pool sheds earn their own sub-boards, so a fault out there stays out there. And the board itself has to carry the sum of everything the property has quietly accumulated, which is why our first question on a big block is always the same: when was the switchboard last sized against what it actually feeds?
Every big block collects some or all of these. Each has its own rules, and its own way of going wrong when wired casually.

The strictest rules on the property: zones around the water, bonding of everything conductive, safety switches on every circuit, and pump gear that gets full-length cable so it does not brown out at every start.

Where it all comes home. The board sized against everything the block now feeds, wiring brought forward era by era, and lighting designed for rooms that deserve better than a grid of downlights.
Big properties accumulate electrical decisions the way they accumulate garden sheds: one at a time, each sensible, the total never examined. The pool went in one decade, the studio the next, air conditioning after that, and every addition found room on a board sized for none of it. Our first visit to a Wahroonga property usually starts with untangling that history, and the most valuable thing we produce is not a repair but a plan.
The plan is simple to read: what the property carries now, what the board and supply can actually deliver, what is due for renewal and in what order, and what the next decade's wish list, the car, the second studio, the heated pool, will need in place before it can happen. Owners use it the way they use a garden master plan: not everything at once, but nothing done twice.
Then the work runs the way work on a family property should: scheduled around the household, gates and dogs and gardeners accounted for, each stage left tested, tidy and documented. The Federation estates are the suburb's public face: Joseland and Hunt houses with ornate plaster ceilings, deep cornices, picture rails and joinery that has outlived every owner. Rewiring one is patient, respectful work. Routes go through the generous roof and subfloor spaces rather than the walls, cuts are planned and agreed before they happen, and lighting is designed for the rooms, roses restored to service, not a Swiss-cheese ceiling of downlights. Staged wing by wing, the family stays home throughout, and the house keeps every scrap of its character while gaining a modern electrical spine.
The other Wahroonga is the one Rose Seidler House announced: mid-century and modern houses whose clean ceilings and glass walls are just as unforgiving as ornate plaster, in the opposite way. There is nowhere to hide a lazy cable run in an open plan, so the planning happens before the tools come out, through roof lines, slab edges and joinery. And the vintage matters: wiring from the fifties is now seventy years old, whatever the architecture around it looks like, so the same honest board-first conversation applies in both Wahroongas.

Substantial, plannable, and almost never as disruptive as owners fear. A Wahroonga Federation house is large, but it also has generous roof and subfloor spaces, which are a rewirer's best friends. Treat it as a small building, because it is one. A proper sub-main sized for the distance from the house, its own small switchboard with safety switches, and then the circuits the space actually needs: power, lighting, data, air conditioning. Done that way, the studio runs independently, a fault out there cannot darken the house, and adding more later is an afternoon. We coordinate with the gate installer's motor requirements, put the whole run on its own protection, and leave you with a gate that works in the rain, which is the actual test of a gate.
It matters more than the pool shop mentions. Pump, heater, chlorinator and lighting circuits all run the full distance from the board, so cable is sized for the run, not just the load, or the equipment browns out every time it starts. Around the water itself the rules are strict and non-negotiable: zones, bonding of conductive surfaces, and safety switch protection on everything. The honest answer needs ten minutes of measurement, and it is the right question to ask before the next addition rather than after. A house that has gained ducted air conditioning, a pool, a studio and a car charger over the years can approach what its supply and board were sized to deliver. We assess the actual maximum demand, tell you plainly how much headroom is left, and where an upgrade is worthwhile, whether that is the board, the mains, or moving to a bigger supply, we quote it as a planned job with the network paperwork handled.
Yes, and the ceilings deserve the care. Ornate plaster, roses and deep cornices rule out the scatter-gun downlight approach. We design lighting that respects the rooms: fittings hung from roses restored to service, picture lights and lamps on switched circuits, discreet modern light where it earns its place, and any cutting planned to the centimetre and agreed first. The result is a house that glows the way it was meant to, with none of the Swiss cheese.
